Trolling motor battery question
I am in the process of planning my 21H and was curious about the standard 36 volt system YF puts in the 21H. Kevin told me the small odyssey batteries will run the 101lb trolling motor all day. I am going to be using my YF for mosty Bass fishing (heavy trolling motor usage) and I am worried about the little batteries holding a charge. Is it worth it to upgrade to the bigger deep cycle odyssey's or am I wasting my money? Any feedback will be appricoated. (Not that I dont beleive Kevin but curious if anyone really wears on these batteries)
thanks
Jimmy

Opt for the Stealth One charger. It tops the batteries off everytime you change spots. It is slick as all get out. I don't know why I haven't seen them before. stealthonechargers.com I think. I have one and love it. I also has a guage on the dash so you can keep an eye on the charge in the batteries. But to answer you question I think the small batteries work good. THe only thing I have seen is we run in the Ocean alot and the beating they take in the bow takes a toll on them.

Jimmy55,
I had the 21 and let me tell you, the those 'little' batteries are very strong. Zero issues on TM all day. Fishing current, grass, etc down in Venice, LA.
Kevin will steer you straight.
What power are you going with on the 21?

N2boatn,
I have seen those stealth chargers before and they do look sweet. Their site is a little odd but I am pretty sure they only work by charging the batteries while the big motor is running. I am sure that would help but I am more concerned about the trolling motor lasting an 8 hour tournament day if I need it in the wind on 101lb thrust.
Skeeter,
Thanks for your feedback. I have been a fan of your old 21H and your youtube videos for awhile. I see you sold the 21H and ordered a 24? DO you just want more room? I am basically making my 21H to be a bass boat on steriods that I can feel confident taking in the flats and bay here in Sarasota/Charlotte Harbor where I have been relocated. My passion is Bass fishing and I want to start fishing tournaments again but still have somthing I can use in the salt. I initially wanted the 24 (who doesn't) but due to BASS tourney rules I have to be 250hp or less. I dont want to insult a 24 by hanging a 250 on the back.
I am looking to geta 21H with the 250SHO like you had. The new Merc 250 pro four stroke is tempting because I am a die hard Merc man but being 100lbs heavier is pushing me to the 250SHO. I have heard nothing but great things about the SHO. I will problaby be reaching out to you in the next 10-12 months, as I love the custom rod storage you did and need somthing similar once I get my 21.
Thanks
Jimmy

Thanks Jimmy, Ask Kevin about the rod storage - I know they can do exactly what you want. I designed it and had it done in Houston.
The SHO is perfect for the 21, BUT get Kevin to prop it with the TXP OT4 - 25 pitch. Simply the best and will run right with the Bravo 1 XS, but much more durable. The OT4s are very strong for the pitch and post low slip numbers. The stock Rev 4 21 is not enough prop. Get a console grab / shadow rail rail added too - YF is doing those now. Mine was done in Houston. Add a Power Pole toe switch to the front lip starboard side placed like your TM plug. Get a Linex coated aluminum drop in box under the helm seat vs the stock glass box - more durable I think. Mitigator helm seating is a must - PPI does that and it is the real deal. Just call me and we can talk through a few tweaks to the 21 that you might like.

I can tell you that my last boat ( 22 Shearwater ) had a 36 volt system , Group 27/ 3 batteries, that I would drain chasing schools of Breeder redfish in the Indian River during the spawn. Keeping up with schools and manuvering well ahead of the school during a 8 hour day would exhaust the batteries. I used cheapie WalMart special brands for trolling . On my 18 foot Skiff I had the Minn Kota 24 volt, 80 pound trust with 2 PC 1200, I would drain them just the same.
If I'm correct, Kevin is talking about the Odessey PC 1200 , I personally feel that the way I will use my 24 Yellowfin, they will not be my choice and will install the PC 1500 . They are about 20 pounds heavier each, but being able to stay on top of the school all day outweighs that weight.
(as long as they all fit in the compartment with the Charger.

The charger is now located in side the console for the trolling motor batteries. I haven't had a problem with my trolling motor batteries on either of my boats. They last all day while chasing schools of trout on the outside beach of the islands I fish. A lot of times we are fishing in swells and that takes a toll on the batteries but they always last all day. I do have to charge them if I use it hard for a day but during the winter when I drift fish a lot I can get about two days out of them. Just tell Kevin what you want and I'm sure he will make it happen just remember that he has tested every option on these boats and there usually is a reason why yf uses the products they use. I have had no complaints on anything that Kevin recommended on either of my two boats.
