View Full Version : Debating 32 or 36 YF

Debating ordering a 32 or a 36 Yellowfin......currently have a 31 and like the ability to easily trailer her to the Keys for lobster, across the state for Bahamas run, etc with my 2009 F-250. Really can't feel the boat back there and she stops very well
However the 36 is very nice when there's 4 footers out and like the backup ability of trips to get me up on plane if an engine goes down. Probably would need bigger than a F-250 and I bet trailering a 50 foot rig (tongue and truck) is no picnic or at least alot more stress than a 32? Guess I could always take the 36 by water which I am guessing must triple the gas bill? Anybody recently run trip V-rods from Sarasota to Key West? Great trip I bet.
Too bad the 34 is not updated as it would be about perfect for what I want....decisions.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

In my opinion the only time you will notice the difference between the two is when you are offshore. The 4' in length and 3" of beam does not make a huge difference when you are towing. You will appreciate the size once she slides off the trailer though.
I tow my 32 with a F250 and have ridden in a 2500hd towing a 36 and you deffinently know they are both back there.
A trip engine 36 weighs about 2k more than a twin engine 32 when they are optioned the same w/o fuel.

Also have to permit a 36 every time you tow it and not a 32. Not that big a deal tho. Are you saying you wish you bought a 36?
thanks.

No not at all the 32 is a machine. She stands head and shoulders above anything in her class. However, if towing is your only concern with the 36 then I would order the 36 and never look back.

You say that the 34 is not as updated as the 32 or 36. What differences are you referring to? I'm currently debating b/w the 32 and 34. Thanks.

The 32 and 36 have rear fish boxes and the 36 has different fuel tank placement and a different splashwell. I have had the 32 and a 36. Get the 36.

the 32 and the new 36 (revised in 2009) has a 50 gallon livewell (used to be 25) in the transom, aft fish boxes, and aluminum fuel tanks. The deck height has also been raised 1.5" to accommodate the heavier 350 yamahas. The old 36 had 3 175 gallon tanks with the outside tanks being glass. The new 36 has all alluminum tanks with the center at 334 gallons and the side saddle tanks at 89 gallons each. The center motor runs on the center tank all the time and the port motor runs on the port or center tank and the stbd motor runs on the stbd or center tank. The tanks were also move forward a little to allow for heavier motors on the transom as well, which in turn made room for aft fish boxes. You can also put a floor livewell in the 36 now but i think you lose the freshwater tank. I'm sure there is somewhere else a freshwater bladder can be put. hope this helps.

T-bone,
What were the negatives, as you saw them, about the 32 as opposed to a 36? What are you trailering your 36 with? I would guess the price difference is around $75K, right?
thanks

There weren't really any negatives about the 32. It was a good boat but we had a 36 before the 32 and when you go back down in size its hard to be happy. I tow mine with a F250 diesel and the price difference is not that much. I would say 50k difference but you would have to ask Wylie.

I know no one has posted on this thread for a while, but I'm going through the same decision process right now and thought I'd get some input (in addition to what has been previously discussed).
I am currently in the same situation and trying to decide which meets my needs better. The isues for me are the various ways I am going to use the boat....I'm not a hard core, only use the boat for fishing kind of guy. I will spend equal amounts of time using the boat for lobstering/diving in the Keys, fishing in Tampa (inshore and offshore) and cruising with the wife/friends (bars/sandbars/etc). I like the idea of the 32' b/c a slightly smaller size to manage around docks/sandbars and easier to trailer. With the 36', the pros are the ability to have both coffin box and forward seating, better rough water perfomance and the fact that I don't run the risk of needing to "upgrade/upsize" in a couple years. I know this is ultimately a personal decision about my boating needs, if any of you have insight, I'd appreciate the advice or experience. Thanks.
Deep End, ever make a decision?

JustLivin,
Decided I was definitely going to need a bigger dock/house so finishing up with doing all that and will be right behind ya. You really can't lose either way.

Maybe look at the 34? Its a little easier to tow but offers the same ride and performance of the 36.

I like the size of the 34' and the option of triples, but I wish the 34' was updated like the 32' and 36'. From what I've heard, no plans for updating the 34?

I don't think the 34 needs "updating" as much as the 36 needed it. The 34 already had the large transom livewell, and there is no need to shift the tanks forward to improve CG because the boat is already perfectly balanced and was never designed for the added weight triple of F350s, so no need to raise the deck. Although I would like the idea of each engine drawing off a common center tank, I keep an extra length of fuel hose to do that in emergency situations. And rear fishboxes? Convenient, yes, deal breaker, no.
My 2c. I love my 34 and when I buy again it will be another, but this time with F300s and upper control station!
